Serial App Reviews

Great App :-)

This app just made my last PC with a DB9 serial port obsolete. :-) Its working like a Mac app should: install - run - use. It found my Prolific PL-2303 right away and started working without any fuss. No more HyperTerminal, no more limitations to 500 lines of buffer, seamless integration into MacOS and, since the PC is gone, more space on my desk.

Great

To be honnest, this app isn’t cheap but, after trying a lot of serial console softwares in mac in the past years, this one is the only one working perfectly. I configure Cisco equipement with this and it works out-of-box.

works really well

It’s a pretty sick little app. I use it for embedded development with arm-based systems. There’s usually a UART for debug so I need this kind of app. Works better than any PC-based teraterm, putty, etc that I’ve used.

The ONLY real solution

This is the only app that works perfectly on the Mac. Plus, it supports the latest release of OS X (El Capitan). This is a no brainer for sysadmin that need to connect to telco equipments or storage equipement with serial console ports. MUST HAVE!

Finally! Something that works PERFECETLY!

Coolterm, SerialTools, goSerial, and the list can go on and on with what doesnt work… all you need to know is Serial works! I struggled for days trying to find something that worked perfectly for me to connect to Sun, Fujitsu, Cisco, and HP-UX boxes with zero issues.. and I can tell you that Serial does the trick. Everything else has some sort of issue with emulation, having to reboot, doesnt handle pulling your cable and reconnecting, ect… Serial is great and worth every penny, I was extremely hesitant to spend $30 on this.. but it’s well worth it seeing I have spent days hunting, searching and banging my head against walls looking for something that works!

Awesome, it just works!

Thank you for coming up with a serial console app that just works without any hassle.

Finally, an OS X serial terminal emulator THAT WORKS — NOW WITH XMODEM!

YAY XMODEM! For those of us who still use this venerable, but simple to implement in embedded hardware, XMODEM and YMODEM are still viable!

Perfection.

This is a terrifiic app. It’s simple and easy to use and has just what I need in a terminal emulation tool. I teach Cisco Networking at a college and need to connect my Macbook to routers, switches, and UNIX servers using a serial console connection. You can actually do this for free from the OSX command line and I have for years becasue of the high price for most of these type of programs. This one was very reasonably priced so I purchased it and WOW, it’s a big improvement over the old way I was doing things, well worth the money - a very good value. One feature I enjoy a lot is the ability to search a page for keywords; “Find”. This is basically similar to the same feature in many web browsers but is missing from all the common Windows terminal emulators (puTTY and terraTERM for example lack this capabiltiy). When I run through a multipage config and bang in command after command for hours it’s great to be able to jump back into the history right to where something is. No need to GREP my output as much. Bottom line, a basic terminal emulator that works well and keeps things simple. Stable, fast, and responsive.

Mac only

Just works great. I always prefer Mac only software, as the developers usually take the time to do it the right way. That really is the case here with Serial! I hesitated about the cost, but bottom line, I needed something that worked, when I needed, with out any setup hassles. Great work!

Good APP, pricey… but you get what you pay for

I stumbled across this app from post on forums. There is a free trial available of this software on there website. If you are worried about cost, download the trial first and make sure your serial adapter is supported. I am using a cheap Prolific PL2303, my expensive keyspan usb to serial did not work with this software (no fault of the developer). It appears that device is no longer supported on any OSX past Lion. I have had no issues with this software it has a very easy to use interface. I have tested it with supermicro motherboards, dell switches and cisco routers. Has the option to press the “Break” key under the “Terminal” Tab (essential when working with cisco devices).

Amazing!

OK… so maybe not so amazing. I mean come on, it is a simple serial terminal emulator — except that OS X has not had something like this… ever! That is what makes this amazing. If you need to quickly get into serial console and you don’t want to install the drivers for your USB to RS232 dongle… then this is the way to go! UPDATE: 2015-04-09, and several versions later - Still amazing. I love this app and use it on a weekly basis. This is a must have tool

Works well

Ive used this for awhile now, and its been rock solid the whole time. All the cheaper apps Ive tried were useless. Im using it to comminucate with my Arduino, and its great. Ive migrated to a bluetooth serial connection, and that worked right off the bat as well, something none of the other apps would do. For some reason DTR doesnt seem to work over bluetooth, but thats a minor issue ( lots of times with the arduino you dont want it to work ). Also when the app isnt in the foreground, the cursor shows ( even though I turn it off), thats being really picky but it is a little annoying since Im usually displaying data with lots of cursor movements. However thats something I cant even do with other apps since they dont emulate VT100 terminal commands, so overall Im happy with this app.

Outstanding Value in My Estimation

I can only say thank you! You saved me countless hours of grief trying to use screen under Terminal.app just trying to get a small amount of medical data out of a personal device. It has already improved my life just by improving my outlook!

WOW. Just WOW

Working in networking, i literally missed putty when i switched to Apple MacBook - this was literally the only thing missing. Offically fixed amazing tool - my ITEN, TRIP, and other usb/serial adapters work perfect no issues…. no drivers, no nothing - simply amazing!!!!! Best App Buy yet.

Outstanding

Detected the CP2104 USB to UART Bridge Controller on my MacBook Pro (Yosemite) allowing me to connect via USB to the console port on my pfSense Firewall. I do not generally post reviews unless something is materially dysfunctional. Serial worked flawlessly! I couldn’t be more pleased. Thanks!

Nice job

I’m a Cisco networking administrator. This tool works great with my new MacBook (the one with only 1 USB-C port). I have the Apple brand USB-C to USB adapter. This terminal emulator works immediately with a generic Prolific USB to Serial adapter, which NO LONGER WORK IN EL CAPITAN. Let me stress that, anyone reading this review. The only way to get a USB to Serial adapter to work, other than this excellent utility, is to modify your operating system and remove safeguards to prevent unsigned applications from running. I do not recommend doing that. This terminal emulator works great. No playing around with “screen” or whatever it was I was using before. Plug in your console cable, hit enter twice and you are at the command line. And all the putty functionality that you are familiar with works. No drivers needed for the USB to Serial adapter. Great job, DTI.

Great for Network Admins on OS X

Best serial app I’ve found yet. Works great and allows XMODEM transfers.

Finally

This was worth the money, although at first I thought I could get around it. If it were $20 it would have been a no-brainer. For Cisco equipment though, it became such a hassle with OS X I was using my Windows VMs but even that now is a pain. Thirty bucks, and the pain went away instantly. This has finally released me from network administration on Windows, I can use my Mac full time now. Thanks DTI!!!

This thing is GREAT!!!

No kidding, if you are a network engineer working on a MAC you have to have this app. Best money I ever spent.

Transitioning from Windows PC

Consoling into network devices is a pretty standard part of my day. After crawling the web trying to find a way to make my existing adapter work, I decided to save myself some time and download this app. It definitely works as advertised and saved me a bunch of time!
